Mthibo’s single off to a flying start

MASERU — Local kwaito artiste, Thabo “Mthibo” Rakhomo, says his latest single which was released two weeks ago has gotten off to a flying start.
The single, Don’t Touch, features South Africa’s pop star, Speedy, and Lesotho’s “Queen of the Airwaves”, Palycetra.
Mthibo said the single was released on October 21 in South Africa and was immediately distributed to radio stations in that country.
It was then released in Lesotho and Botswana three days later, he said.
“I must say the feedback from all the three countries has been breathtaking. I am very satisfied with how the public is responding,” Mthibo told the Weekender this week.
He said the new single was taken off his third album, Jump and Reverse, which will be out early next year.
“I am not yet sure when I am going to release the album because I am currently focused on pushing all singles to familiarise them with the public before the release of the full-length album,” Mthibo said.
He said the single, Don’t Touch, had opened doors for him.
“I am planning to release another single in December which will also feature more South African big names. The names will only be revealed once contracts are sealed,” he said.
He said he was planning to deepen his working relationship with Speedy by working on other projects including music videos.
“Speedy will feature in Don’t Touch’s music video and a few other projects. I will also appear on some of his music videos and songs,” he said.
“It is a blessing to work with such a talented artiste who has so much experience. Being the first artiste to do this in Lesotho, I feel I have set standards in the local industry.”
Mthibo said he chose to work with Speedy after his fruitful collaboration with Durban-based artiste, Professor, on the hit track Lento.
“I approached Speedy because of his ability to fit in every music genre. This ability was well demonstrated when he collaborated with Professor on Lento which is a hit in many African countries in Africa.”
“I have worked with the likes of Skebza D, Dunamis, Rumo la Kuebe, Cozyboy, MIC-Checker, Sneezo, Hirachy, Palycetra and Speedy on all the songs that are complete.
“This album is very colourful because it features artistes from different genres.
“It is meant to set a mark while creating an opportunity for aspiring talented artistes in the country,” Mthibo said.
He added that he had also set his eyes on working with Africa’s best.
“I have learnt that nothing is impossible. This is the reason why my next move will see me collaborate with big names in the African music industry.
“I want to collaborate with musicians from different genres and of course maintaining the relationships I have established with South African guys.
“I am expanding my music so I can be able to fit in everywhere and be versatile while maintaining my kwaito style,” Mthibo said.
Mthibo scooped the best kwaito album award during the 2008 Lesotho Haeso Music Awards.
His first two albums, Number One and Tsokotsa also did very well on the market.

Nollyhood stars coming to Lesotho

MASERU — Popular Nigerian child movie stars, Chinedu Ikedieze and Osita Iheme, who are famed across the continent for their humorous films, are coming to town.
The two movie stars are set to be in Maseru on 9 and 10 September for stand-up and drama comedy at Lehakoe and Setsoto stadium, respectively.
The event is organised by Gold Bond Consult, a local arts promotions company.
One of the organisers, Joachim Iyke Moneh, said they were bringing the two because of their popularity in Lesotho.
Ikedieze and Iheme will be performing alongside local musicians Mthibo, Stlofa and Dunamis while the likes of DJs Mekonko, Tseko and Tybzen will be blazing the turntables.
“We have been in Lesotho for a very long time and we learned how the two are popular among Basotho.”
“They have visited South Africa and we heard their Basotho fans complaining that they didn’t take a turn to visit Lesotho so we decided to organise a Lesotho focused show to promote the stars. We hope to create a platform for them to interact with their local fans,” Moneh said.
He added, “We will have a VIP show on September 9 at Lehakoe and a public show on September 10 at Setsoto Stadium.”
Moneh said they were making arrangements to meet Nollyhood fans at district level, especially schools.
“Chinedu Ikedieze and Osita Iheme’s popularity is very broad so we want to create an allowance for school children to see the two stars. We will be making arrangements with school principals prior to the events.”
Moneh said the shows would also serve to put to rest rumours that one of the actors is late. “The stars’ presence will ease speculations that one of them is late. They will also answer questions of whether they are kids or grown men,” Moneh said.
“We have never really witnessed an international star coming to Lesotho to entertain fans so by presenting the two we are bringing a new feel.”
He added the event would also help sell the country’s tourism sector.
“The two rats’ films are shot in different settings in Africa so during their visit we are going to take them site seeing so they can see the beauty Lesotho holds, maybe they will identify a spot for their future films.”

Vodacom Superstar finalists to start mentoring programme

MASERU — Vodacom Superstar Music and Dance competition finalists are set to undergo a mentoring and rehearsal programme by jazz singer Bhudaza and South African musician Chomee.
The 30 finalists will start their programme next week.
Vodacom Lesotho announced the finalists, three from each of the 10 categories, on Tuesday.
The company injected M1 million into the 2012 version of the competition.
Both the music and dance elements have five categories.
The finals will be at Maseru Club on August 18.
“All 30 finalists will be prepared for the 18th. They are going to be taught what music is and what dance is.
“Chomee however won’t be here for all these days to mentor finalists but she will have people that she works with to help her,” said Vodacom Lesotho’s marketing specialist, Seema Tsotetsi.
Tsotetsi said Chomee would be responsible for mentoring dancers while Bhudaza will mentor musicians.
Vodacom Lesotho’s brand manager ‘Mamotebang Mokoena advised those that did not make it to the top 30 not to lose hope.
“Making it to the top 50 of over 3 000 people that auditioned means you have talent, don’t let not making it to the top be the end of it but rather continue to sell yourselves and knock on doors,” Mokoena said.
Bhudaza Mapefane, the competition’s ambassador, told the finalists to work hard.
“You all should be happy to have received this opportunity of discovering your potential and work on enriching yourselves with knowledge in your respective talents.
“You may have talents but you always need practise to perfect your art.”
Vodacom Lesotho managing executive, Tsabiso Letsoela, said the competition is just the start of bigger things that will take Basotho by storm.
“We are thankful to Basotho for their support throughout the years.
“We have engaged and supported many initiatives including local soccer and those are just the beginning of greater things to come.”
Letsoela urged local companies to help improve lives in Lesotho.
He challenged Lesotho Television to have programmes that showcase Lesotho’s talent.
The youth, Letsoela said, must stay away from drugs and other risky behaviour.
A gospel group called The Disciples, which failed to make it to the top three finalists, told the Weekender they were not discouraged.
“We don’t see ourselves as losers, it’s a competition and the mere fact that we managed to make it this far (Top 50) proves we have the potential,” said Atrax, a member of the group.
Local kwaito star, Mthibo, said he is confident that he is going to take the first prize on August 18.
“I made it to the top three for one reason and purpose, to win and that’s what’s going to happen at Maseru Club.”
