feature photo MASERU — Popular jazz musician, Sechaba ‘Fatere’ Litabe (pictured), lost part of his right thumb after a firecracker exploded in his hand on New Year’s Eve.
The musician, who was crowned Lesotho’s best jazz musician in 2007 and 2008, said he was trying to demonstrate to his children how to explode the firecracker when it suddenly went off, blowing away his thumb.
He was rushed to Berea Hospital where doctors unsuccessfully tried to reattach the thumb.
Narrating his nightmare to the Lesotho Times at Berea Hospital yesterday, Fatere said he was preparing to celebrate the arrival of 2010 in style when a blinding flash turned his world upside down.
“Ke se khaotse ka mali le monoana oa letsoho o motono (I painfully bore the brunt of celebrating the New Year with blood and losing my right thumb),” Fatere said.
The singer said he had taken his three children out for dinner at a local hotel on the fateful night and decided to head home just before midnight.
“I was with my children as their mother had gone to Bloemfontein that afternoon. We arrived home at around 23:45hrs and were setting-off firecrackers together.
“But there were just this one with a warning message on it, saying it must be exploded under parental supervision.
“I decided to do just that before I could hand over some of the firecrackers to my children. But before I knew it, it exploded right in my hand.”
Fatere said his brother then rushed him to the local hospital, only to be told that the doctors could do little to save his thumb.
Fatere, meanwhile, has said the injury was seriously threatening his musical career.
“I was working on my gospel album which was scheduled for release later this month. My second afro-jazz album was also due at Easter. Now I’m forced to abandon these albums.
“I cannot go into the studio because I can’t play any musical instrument. I cannot say when the albums will  be released because I’m going to start learning how to play the instruments without my thumb after the hand has completely healed.”
A nurse at the Berea hospital who declined to be named told the Lesotho Times that Fatere was recuperating well.
She, however, advised Fatere to keep exercising his fingers “constantly” to avoid paralysis.
“You must make sure that you move them almost every time because if you don’t, by the time you heal they might be paralysed,” she told a bewildered Fatere.
Fatere said the incident made him realise why the police were always warning people about the use of firecrackers.
“Now I understand why they (police) are sometimes banning some of these firecrackers,” he said.

Fatere injured in road accident

MASERU — Popular musician Fatere was critically injured on Sunday night after he was involved in a road accident near St Agnes High School in Teyateyaneng.
Police spokesperson Inspector Masupha Masupha confirmed the incident to Xpress People on Friday.
He said the musician sustained serious injuries after the Mercedes Benz he was driving was involved in a head-on collision with another vehicle.
“One of the cars was trying to overtake,” Masupha said.
The jazz and gospel star said he was returning home from Maseru when the accident occurred.
“I had just performed at an event at Manthabiseng Convention Centre the previous night (Saturday) but because I had a few things to do in Maseru on Sunday I decided to finish them before driving back home on Sunday night,” he said.
“I must have dozed off because I was feeling a bit fatigued when the accident happened,” Fatere said in an interview with XpressPeople when the paper visited him at his Teyateyaneng home on Friday.
He added: “I suffered a fractured left thigh and broken ribs. I now experience chest pains; I have never felt such pain. My chest aches whenever I speak.”
Fatere, who was visibly in pain, is now walking with the aid of crutches.
The musician was first admitted to Berea Hospital after the accident before he was transferred to Queen Elizabeth II Hospital for an operation.
Fatere has since been discharged and is now being attended to by a doctor at his home in Teyateyaneng, about 40km north of Maseru.
He said his doctor has since advised him that he would be confined to bed for between three and four months.
The musician said the other driver who was involved in the accident is stable.
“I heard the other driver has chest pains and his eye was also injured. He is still in hospital and is in a stable condition,” he said.
The accident happened just a week before the award-winning artiste was due to release a DVD for his new gospel album titled Ikokobetse.
The album was released in January.
“This happened just a week before the release of my live DVD,” Fatere said.
“There will now be delays in the release of the DVD,” he said.
Masupha said the case would be heard in the Teyateyaneng magistrate’s court once police investigations are complete.

Benefit concert for ailing Fatere

Lerato Matheka
MASERU — A local music production company in association with Lesotho’s music superstars, Tshepo Tshola and Bhudaza, are planning a benefit concert for jazz artiste Fatere who was seriously injured in a road accident in May.
Fatere is still recuperating at Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein, South Africa, after he was transferred from Queen Elizabeth II Hospital following an unsuccessful operation.
Also set to take part in the benefit show is music superstar Dunamis.
The three are expected to headline the concert that seeks to raise funds for the Seoli hit-maker who sustained a fractured thigh, broken ribs and a broken jaw in an accident near St Agnes High School in Teyateyaneng on May 29.
The company organising the concert is ia called Kingdom of Lesotho Music Production (KOL).
“After the accident Ntate Sechaba (Fatere) was admitted to Queen II then transferred to Berea and back to Queen II, where he was discharged after a week.
“At that time he had still not recovered,” ’Mamorena Litabe, Fatere’s wife told journalists at a press conference held in Maseru this week.
She added: “While I was looking after him at home he experienced difficulty with breathing so I took him back to Queen II.
“They tried to operate him on his thigh but it ended up producing pus because it was infected so Queen II then transferred him to Pelonomi Hospital last month.”
Litabe said the family has been suffering a lot since the accident because the musician was the sole breadwinner.
Bhudaza said Fatere needs support.
“I am talking here as a friend and a colleague, Fatere is one of us and he needs help so I urge all artistes to come forth and support the initiative,” Bhudaza said.
“He was from my house just before the accident and he had been complaining that he was exhausted from his performance the previous night.”
He added: “If I knew I (that he was going to be involved in such an accident I) could have stopped him from leaving but I had other commitments.”
Bhudaza said the concert is meant to raise enough funds to help Fatere’s family during this tough time and pay for his medical bills.
“We are going to open a trust fund account that will be accessible to ’M`e Malitaba to help assist the family.”
Dunamis said they are yet to talk to other local artistes before confirming the final line-up for the benefit concert.
“The only confirmed artistes are me, Bhudaza and Tshepo. We are still going to call for a meeting with other local artistes to find out those who are willing to pledge their performances for a good cause,” he said.
He added that Lesedi FM’s Twasa and Ba2cada were also keen to help and make guest appearances.
“Ntate Fatere is a big artiste and we are trying to bring fans and supporters from all walks of life so we spoke to Twasa and Ba2cada and they are keen to support.”
Dunamis said the concert will take place before the end of the year after confirming the line-up, date and venue.
He urged people to lend a hand.
“We invite everyone who supports the development of the local music industry and wishes to lessen the plight of Ntate Fatere to come forward.”
